Cinda Johnson, Ed.D March 18, 2010 Transition Issues: Preparing for Life Beyond High School
Cinda Johnson, Professor of Special Education (specializing in transition issues), Seattle University
Cinda Johnson, Ed.D. is a professor in the Master in Teaching program
and Special Education at Seattle University. She is the principal
investigator and director for the Center for Change in Transition
Services. She is responsible for the statewide post-school
data research in Washington State. Dr. Johnson has been a leader in
using this information for program improvement, program evaluation and
goal setting. In her work at the Center, Dr. Johnson provides training
and technical assistance in secondary special education. She is the
author of the Guide to Transition Services in Washington State, the
Guide to Functional Vocational Evaluation, Exemplary Practices in
Secondary Schools, and post-school outcome reports from 1997 to
present. She recently completed Best Practices in Secondary Programs
for Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, in Promising
Practices for the Transition of Students with Emotional or Behavioral
Disabilities from School to Community (Cheney, D. ed).

Marlene Freeman, M.D. May 12, 2010 Complementary and Alternative Medications
Marlene Freeman, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Women's Mental Health
Dr. Freeman’s clinical and research experience has been
focused on antenatal and postpartum depression, as well as complementary
treatment strategies for mood disorders.
She completed
residency at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program and
served as a co-investigator in the first clinical trial of adjunctive
omega-3 fatty acids for the treatment of bipolar disorder. After
residency, she completed a research fellowship in the Biological
Psychiatry Program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine,
focused on bipolar disorder treatment research.
She serves as Vice Editor-in-Chief for The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry since
2007, after serving as Deputy Editor since 2003. She chaired a
subcommittee on Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Psychiatry, on behalf of the
American Psychiatric Association (APA). She currently chairs the APA’s
Task Force on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. She served on
the APA’s Major Depressive Disorder Treatment Guideline Revision.
Mary Fristad, Ph.D. December 8, 2010 Caring for the Caregiver: Putting Yourself First (or at least not last)
Mary Fristad, Ph.D., Ohio State University
Dr. Fristad is a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Ohio
State University, where she has been on faculty since 1986. Dr. Fristad
is the Director of Research and Psychological Services in the OSU
Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Fristad’s area of
specialty is childhood mood disorders. She has published over 100
articles and book chapters addressing the assessment and treatment of
childhood-onset depression, suicidality and bipolar disorder
(manic-depression). Dr. Fristad recently edited the Handbook of Serious Emotional
Disturbance in Children and Adolescents. She has also written a book
for families entitled Raising a Moody Child: How to Cope with Depression and Bipolar Disorder.
Dr. Fristad has been the principal or co-principal investigator on over
a dozen federal, state and local grants. Recently, she been awarded a
5-year NIMH grant to investigate the efficacy of Multi-Family
Psychoeducation Groups in treating childhood mood disorders and a
2-year grant from the Ohio Department of Mental Health to investigate
the efficacy of Individual Family Psychoeducation in treating
early-onset bipolar disorder. Dr. Fristad is a member of CABF's Scientific Advisory Council.
