Suggestions for Use
Use "Safe and Drug Free Schools Funds" to purchase Day for Night© as a supplemental material to help
you meet the goals of your drug prevention program. Under the
July 22, 1999 update to the Principles of Effectiveness, an
agency or school district may purchase supplemental materials
such as videos using SDFS funds. To do so, the agency or school
district is asked to consider the following questions:
- Does Day for Night©
meet an established need and goal of your drug prevention
program?
- Does Day for Night
support other prevention activities?
- Is the information in Day for Night© accurate and up-to-date? (YES)
- Is Day for Night©
based on acknowledged research and evaluation efforts
in the fields of drug education and violence prevention?(YES)

Coordinated School Health Programming
Comprehensive Health Education
Substance Abuse Prevention Programming
Family Life Education
Life Skills Education
Special Education
Peer Education Programs
Use Day for Night© in an Integrated Curriculum at the High School level:
Language Arts: poetry, fiction and nonfiction about teenage
depression and related mood disorders, essays, other forms of
creative writing, research papers and journal writing about
mental illness; interview, reporting and presentation skills;
analytical skills applied to movie reviews and/or book reports
featuring stories that address teenage depression.
Health Classes: connections between mental illness and efforts
to prevent substance abuse, violence, pregnancy and HIV/AIDS;
mental illness and the brain; depression and interpersonal relationships;
impacts of mental illness on families; access to health care
and mental health resources; mental health as aspect of public
health.
Science: biology; human biology; the nervous system; brain function;
pharmacology; genetics; public health.
Social Sciences: stigma; prejudice and discrimination regarding
mental illness; historical responses to mental illness; legal
issues and mental illness; media messages about mental illness;
cultural messages about mental illness; biographies of major
public figures who suffered from depression or bipolar disorder.
